The best growing conditions in the world may very well be in the Richmond Annex. Our first site visit was enchanted by the gigantic plants exploding into bloom around the neighborhood. The design for this garden was largely an ode to the existing olive tree, which had been muted amongst many overgrown neighbors. One of the most thrilling facts about this garden is that the Australian grass tree, in this case a Xanthorrhoea glauca, will definitely outlive us all, as it can live for 600 years. We look forward to seeing these plants grow unspeakably large.
The drought-tolerant plant palette leans California-native (like Salvia apiana here)with a few friends from Australia, South Africa, and Mexico.
