Climbing neighborhood peaks is one of San Francisco’s great delights — Twin Peaks, Tank Hill, Bernal and Corona Heights… There’s something magical about seeing the city rolled out before you, its topography carved out in hills and valleys. Underfoot the city’s geology lays bare, the bedrock washed clean by the wind and overgrown by a host of hardy, clinging plants.
We wanted to capture that feeling for this garden in Noe Valley. Set atop a rocky outcrop with stunning views, we were inspired by the underlying geology just below the surface.
We channeled San Francisco’s history of quarrying — choosing a variety of chunky aggregates and boulders to lend texture to the space. A cedar screen lets us see the view and its airy lightness contrasts with the heavy stone. The mostly native plant palette includes species that love clinging to rocky hillsides like Dudleya, Artemisia, and Lupine. Sea Lavender, a species often relegated to parking lots, shows off its beautiful bloom and foliage in a different context.
It looks easy peasy when we show the “finished” landscape, but it took a lot of time and human effort to transform the site into what it is now…
While the view needed no improvement, the original the site provided plenty of challenges. Situated on a steep hill, the yard was propped up by crumbling brick steps, disintegrating planters and plenty of overgrowth.
But there were clear moments of opportunity as well. We refined and expanded upon an existing system of terraces, using them to provide distinct moments for entertaining and relaxation.
The garden was built during one of the rainiest winters in recent Bay Area history. We took advantage of the weather by seed bombing the hillside with a mix of native wildflowers.
An exposed outcrop displays the geology below the garden above.
